Higham Hill Theatre
The Higham Hill Theatre is designed to accommodate a wide variety of performance types with minimal material and design. Composed of various shades of red block, the theatre consists of a flexible range of stages and seating at different heights. It accommodates informal seating for the adjacent café, or performances organised by local youth groups, musicians and similar creatives, while enabling either proscenium or in-the-round configurations.
Situated between Higham Hill Park, Higham Hill Hub, the café, the playground and outdoor gym, the theatre is intended as a piece of social infrastructure that connects the various community programmes. The ground, step and seat are each constructed in a different colour referencing the geological layers of a landscape. Its curving edges respond to the surrounding trees and site context, as well as providing a playful setting for performances.
vPPR Architects was set up in 2009 by Tatiana von Preussen, Catherine Pease and Jessica Reynolds, and is an award-winning practice whose cultural and residential designs prioritise communal space, landscape and playful form. In 2017 they won a RIBA Award for their Redchurch Street warehouse refurbishment in Shoreditch.
